I’ve just heard about the release of a really interesting new film and felt that I had to blog about it. Heavy Load is a documentary that follows the rise to fame of a thrash metal punk band that is made up of people both with and without a learning disability. Specialising in thrash covers of late 70’s punk (including The Clash’s ‘I Fought The Law’) – or punk versions of recent pop (including Kylie Minogue’s ‘Can’t Get You Out of My head’), Heavy Load is unlikely to have a top ten hit. ‘We like to take a classic song’ says guitarist Mick, ‘and crucify it’. I can’t wait to see this film!

I’m Turning Point’s Press Officer: I used to work at the BBC and in my time there I got involved with the OUCH! Disability website. They have a podcast which is presented by disabled comedians Liz Carr and Mat Fraser. I was there pressing the buttons on the very first recording and now they’ve done over twenty. It’s an irreverent look at disability and has just won a Royal Television Society Award.
So I was delighted when two service users from our services in Hertfordshire took OUCH! up on the offer to be part of the studio audience for the 2007 Christmas recording of the podcast.

Having got up at 5.30 for an early train to Bournemouth, I arrived in good time last Monday for the start of day two of the Labour party conference. Turning Point was exhibiting this year, with a theme of ‘connected care’ – how to make sure that services are more joined up to support people with particularly complex needs. This issue is very important for Turning Point as we work with people with a range of needs, such as those affected by drug or alcohol misuse, a mental health problem, or those with a learning disability. We want to try to change the way public services work so that they are just that – services to the public – designed to meet the whole needs of individuals. Turning Point is part of the new Learning Disability Coalition which is fighting for more support and funding for people with a learning disability.
It’s made up of ten major learning disability charities, and was set up because of growing concern about the services for people with a learning disability being cut back due to financial pressures. Its aim is to make sure that there is enough public funding so that people with a learning disability can have the same chances and choices as everyone else.
